About Our Store

Our Mission

To nourish and bring joy to the Wellfleet community—and beyond—by providing each customer with welcoming, attentive service and a wide selection of high-quality products.

The Story of Our Store

In 2007, Marshall Smith, a legendary entrepreneur and New England bookseller, bought what was called Lema's Grocery Store in the historic, circa 1935 building that is now home to Wellfleet Marketplace.

Always a visionary, Marshall turned Wellfleet Marketplace into a vital community hub, expanding the traditional grocery store to include everything our village and visitors need with a deli, prepared foods, beer and wine, gifts, toys, and, of course, an excellent bookstore.

Marshall passed away on May 10, 2022. His son, Jed, an accomplished entrepreneur, pioneering impact investor, and environmental activist, took the store over at the height of the pandemic. He’s grateful for the opportunity to build on his father’s legacy and continue to serve Wellfleet and the surrounding community.

Under Marshall’s leadership, the store became relentlessly focused on our customers. Now managed by Barbara Boone and Bob Medeiros, we continue to support community needs by sourcing high-quality products and hiring an excellent, local staff eager to go above and beyond.

A Community Hub

We love Wellfleet and do our best to be a good neighbor. We donate products to local gatherings and always support local events like Oysterfest, book readings, the open-air music festival Porchfest, and the Wellfleet Christmas Stroll (stop by for hot chocolate and cookies!).

We’re also proud to feature products from Outer Cape artists and chefs, offering unique gifts ranging from delicate macarons to hand-thrown vases. Our summer flowers, honey, and much of our produce are grown by local farmers. We support visiting and local authors at their various readings and by carrying their books in our bookstore. We also sell Wellfleet Preservation Hall’s renowned Taste of Wellfleet cookbook and return 100% of the proceeds back to support the Hall.
